The AGM for our reduced season (January to September 2023) was held after Nov '23's monthly competition at Thorney Golf Course Peterborough on Saturday 11th November, 2023.

AGM started at 15:06 and was chaired (temporarily) by Jim Darrah.

1 Apologies from Committee – Apologies were received from Mark Smith, Dan Cheek & Simon Wilson
Gratitude was expressed for Simon’s and Mark’s efforts over their time on the committee. We look forward to seeing them as ‘normal’ Golfers!

2 Approval of last AGM Minutes 08 Jan 2023 – Minutes from last AGM were agreed

3 Treasurers Summary Report 2023 – Report by Colin Clarke

(Accounts on AGM email sent 29/11/2023)

*Not included were usual updating the Champion’s board, which is covered by Ray Hillhouse in lieu of membership fee.

4 Membership List – Membership is currently at 28 members

5 Annual Subscription/Green Fees – Discussion was had about current society finances. It was agreed that…
•    Annual membership fee stays at £60 and needs to be paid by the 3rd monthly competition from this AGM (so 13th January, 2024)
•    We maintain the current prizes for comp winners, money holes, Gross scores, etc. based on the above
•    A proposal of increasing the monthly competition fee to £35 to cover the rising cost of the rounds. Motion was passed with no objections

6 Handicaps & Competitions – There was discussion about the current handicaps and our current scoring under the WHS and while there were a few big winners (with scores) the competitions were getting closer.

There was also a proposal to break the 12 monthly competitions into 9 standard board-counting competitions, 1 x 3 club challenge, 1 x Texas Scramble and a 1 x Medal – more to follow when courses for ‘23/’24 are booked.

A discussion was had about the effect the ‘slope’ rating has on the courses we play and whether it would affect some of our recent competitions where we had 40+ points as winners. The consensus was that as the slope affects all (by adding or reducing competition handicaps) we should leave it for now and not take it into consideration at the moment. We will continue with the current modus operadi, in having temporary handicap changes for recent winners, etc, as per our rules.

7 Society Rules Review 2023 – No major changes of rules were agreed

8 Committee 2023 – Jim Darrah proposed a change to the WHGS committee, mainly in the role descriptions. Due to Mark & Simon resigning from the committee, it was proposed that we re-aligned the roles to suit the requirements of administration and competition day requirements. In line with this, for the season 2023/2024, the committee will be as follows…
Chairman (Temp) - Jim Darrah, Treasurer – Colin Clarke, Club Captain – Dan Cheek, Competitions & Web Guru – Brian Bell & Handicap Secretary – Jim Darrah.
With an eye on 24/25 season and some succession, we will endeavor to bundle some of the tasks under a particular role, but with help from some floating members of the committee. With this in mind, volunteers were asked for and Martin Riddell (Proposed Paul Watson, Seconded Ray Ward) and John Wiggins (Proposed David McNeill, Seconded John Cullen) were voted onto the committee. These changes will be reflected in the only change to the Society Rules on the GolfSoc website.

9 Any Other Business – Other business discussed, was…

•    The subject of ‘back to the White Hart was again discussed. Currently, we don’t get anywhere  specific for the post-comp pint and have to find our own space in the bar, which can be busy and noisy. The subject of 2023 prizegiving and a meal was discussed and it was agreed for this year, we would try for TJ’s in Corby Town Centre for a meet, meal, board presentation and brown envelopes. Ongoing discussions will happen regarding a location for post-comp drinks, scorecard post-mortems and general handicap moaning!
•    Congratulations were expressed to our 2023 Champion, Anthony McLear! (Applause)
•    Meeting was closed at 15:42
